INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

Contacts and Constraints provides a comprehensive exploration of the systems that make real‑time physics simulation possible. Covering constraint solvers, collision response, numerical stability, contact generation, and the underlying mathematics, the book demystifies the inner workings of modern physics engines. It bridges theory and implementation, offering developers the tools and intuition needed to build reliable, predictable, and high‑performance physical interactions for games, simulations, and interactive applications.

Fine as a reference

Three stars feels about right. Useful, but not essential.

I have been working with physics simulation for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. I particularly liked the way the author builds up from simple cases before introducing the harder material. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Fine, but there are stronger books on the same subject if you look around.

Hard to recommend

Not for me. The pacing did not work and I struggled to finish it.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The explanations are careful without being condescending, which is a difficult balance to strike. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Two stars. The subject deserves a better treatment than this.

Worth every page

I have read a lot of books on this subject and this is the clearest.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.
